You may know him as the Season 5 at-home winner of The Biggest Loser television show, but Bernie Salazar is also the guest speaker at the 14th Annual Employee of the Year Luncheon on April 29, 2010 at the Arlington Convention Center.
Hosted by the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council Education and Research Foundation's Workforce Center, the Employee of the Year Luncheon serves as an opportunity to salute the North Texas hospital workforce, celebrating the positive spirit of non-management employees making a difference. Nominees are selected individually by hospitals and introduced at the event. In the dramatic fashion of an awards show, recipients will be announced and asked to come to the stage to receive their honor.
Nominees are separated into four categories including hospitals between 0-99 beds, hospitals between 100-250 beds, hospitals between 251-499 beds and hospitals with more than 500 beds. Two recipients are selected from each category and receive trophies and cash awards. Additional honors include the Community Service Award and the inaugural Physicians' Award, a distinction recognizing contributions of doctors who share their enthusiasm in the hospital. The Rex McRae Scholarship will also be presented to an area healthcare student.
A school teacher from Chicago, Salazar became a folk hero on NBC's The Biggest Loser when he lost 130 pounds over a period of several weeks. His efforts garnered him not only a $100,000 cash prize, but a renewed vigor and purpose in life. The theme of this year's Luncheon is Health, Wellness & Life. Joining Salazar will be trainer Andrea Everett. Salazar and Everett will visit several hospitals in the metroplex during their stay.
"When I heard Bernie and Andrea would be available to spread the word on living a healthy life, I thought this would be a great opportunity," said Kristin Jenkins, president of the Foundation. "This luncheon inspires healthcare employees who understand the importance of providing excellent care to patients. Having speakers who will volunteer their time to contribute to that quality adds value to the spirit of the event."
