TX Ag Commissioner Rolls Back Ban on Deep Fryers & Soda Machines in Schools…. Our Response

06/18/2015

Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council’s Response to:

Texas Agriculture Commissioner rolling back ban on deep fryers & soda machines:

“Obesity is a very serious issue in Texas for adults and children. The childhood obesity rate in Texas is one of the highest in the nation.  Many people with obesity issues develop Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other chronic diseases like some forms of cancer. It is unfortunate that the Agriculture Commissioner took this action today. We need to educate adults and children on healthy diets, exercise and proper food choices. We also need to focus on “food deserts” within communities with  socio-economic challenges. Political preference should not be public health policy as the scientific evidence should prevail not antidotal comments. The real freedom we should strive for is freedom from chronic disease and therefore a healthier Texas.”
