If you needed to go the hospital and had a choice where to go, how would you decide? As a healthcare consumer, you rely on many things to help you judge the quality of care provided by hospitals. Factors influencing your decision might include where you live, experiences of family and friends and what you've read in the newspaper.
Now you have Hospital Compare, a new website tool to help you make that decision. Hospital Compare allows you to compare the quality of care given by hospitals in both your community and nationally.
The website allows you to see how well hospitals follow "best practices" when caring for patients with certain conditions. This idea is fueled by the positive conviction that if hospitals follow these "best practices" when treating patients, they will be better off in the long run. The medical conditions detailed include heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgery.
Hospitals not treating adult patients for these medical conditions, including children's, psychiatric or long-term care facilities, will not have information available on the website.
Hospital Compare was created through the efforts of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and organizations that represent hospitals, doctors, employers, accrediting organizations and the public.
